May 26, Directed by the NRA

With your nose stuck up the anus

Of the nation’s NRA,

You can’t see blood spatter stain us

As the bullets fly each day.

You’re content to let them train us

That it has to be this way,

When you osculate the anus

Of the nation’s NRA.

If you’re Paxton, Patrick, Abbott, (1)

And you spout the right wing line,

There’s gun lobby cash; you grab it;

With your ethics, that’s just fine.

You’ve developed the bad habit:

Bowing down to the Gun Shrine.

If you’re Paxton, Patrick, Abbott,

And recite the right wing line.

Hear Greg Abbott down in Texas,

With his hands stained bloody red,

Say, “The NRA directs us;

“We’re just doing what they said.

“And gun lobby cash affects us.”

(That is something left unsaid.)

See Greg Abbott down in Texas,

Wash his hands, stained bloody red.

Now Greg Abbott’s pissed at Beto; (2)

Beto said, “This is on you.”

Schools are not Streets of Laredo, (3)

Where they strum and sing, “adieu.”

Abbott spouts the right wing credo,

While we watch the deaths ensue.

So Greg Abbott’s pissed at Beto;

Beto told him, “It’s on you.”

Cancun Cruz was asked to answer,

“Why so many gun deaths here?’

He became a dodging dancer

As he’s been through his career.

Like a smoker with lung cancer,

Feeling the Grim Reaper near,

Ted would not admit the answer:

Just too many damn guns here.

  • In order: Ken Paxton, Attorney General: Dan Patrick, Lieutenant Governor, Greg Abbott, Governor, all of Texas.
  • Beto O’Rourke, the Democratic candidate for Governor, who interrupted Governor Abbott’s news conference to tell him, “This is on you….” because Abbott had done nothing effective to prevent attacks such as the one in Uvalde. Abbott took umbrage.
  • “The Streets of Laredo,” Famous cowboy ballad about death in a gunfight. Authorship is disputed and the lyrics have been revised many times.  The evolution of the song is a fascinating read.  My favorite version is by Marty Robbins.
