And some red states don’t want to teach kids why

We still have racial bigotry today.

 

Yes, some red states don’t want to teach kids why

They don’t want blacks to rise, or even try.

One way to keep them down: suppress the vote

And base such legislation on a lie.

 

One way to keep blacks down: suppress the vote.

Resist change with a stone wall and a moat.

Their motive force is white supremacy.

They fear black votes may be an antidote.

 

Those poisoned still by white supremacy,

Which lingers from our nation’s infancy,

Get stomach aches when they see civil rights

Expand to make a larger family.

 

Those who oppose expanding civil rights

View changes like an old house views termites.

So, “Juneteenth” as a federal holiday

Reminds them of more progress it invites.
