Trump’s Name

Trump is obsessed with naming things, first buildings, now a lake, (1)
A tomcat marking his domain when he is on the make.
Will Donald’s names be permanent, survive through history?
Or will they soon be cast aside with other trumpery?

Trump wants his name up everywhere, on airports, roads, and walls.
When courts say he must take it down, he grumbles and he stalls. (2)
He wants to be remembered, find a place his name will last;
Microbes might have the answer, for the choices there are vast.

Let’s think of the Reflecting Pool, that was just on the news.
When Donald ordered maintenance, the waters turned chartreuse. (3)
For, in the stagnant waters, Scenedesmus algae grew,
With Desmodesmus genus thriving in the slimy goo. (4)

Green algae, many species showing great diversity,
Have naturally offended Trump, too much equality.
But, what if we would name an algal genus after Don?
His name might last forever, or long after Trump is gone.

So, Scenedesmus, Desmodesmus, both a greenish hue,
Cyanobacterial phyla, if Trump likes more blue. (5)
More than a million choices: algae and prokaryotes.
Let’s name a species after Trump; time to send in your votes. (6)

Now, Scenedesmus trumpii has a nice ring to it.
It sounds quite scientific, no one will charge it’s bullshit.
Then Trump would be remembered every time the Pool turns green
And TV news would never say that Trump’s Pool wasn’t clean.

(1) Trump just made news by claiming he had changed the name of Lake
Ontario to Lake America.
(2) Review the Kennedy Center’s ongoing kerfuffle.
(3) Lots of pictures on the news: Trump charged the algal bloom was due to
vandalism.
(4) Both of these were identified by microbiologists.
(5) Cyanobacteria are often called “blue-green algae,” although they are
prokaryotes, not algae.
(6) Trump may decide who is eligible to vote and whose vote to count.
