The Trump Administration says they made a small boo boo.
They snatched Garcia off the street and then bid him adieu.
Without a legal process, ICE just put him on a plane.
He now rots in El Salvador where Trump says he’ll remain.
Our Highest Court told Donald Trump, “Facilitate return,”
But Donald Trump acts like the Court has spoken out of turn.
“He’s in a foreign prison, far beyond what I control.
“So what if we have boo booed, without legal rigamarole?”
Trump doesn’t seem to give a damn about due process law,
Especially brown deportees, (who all must have some flaw.)
The courts ruled that due process must apply to everyone.
But Donald says, “No, just to me, no matter what I’ve done.” (1)
Did Donald ask El Salvador to let Garcia go?
The simple answer to that question is just one word, “No.”
Who cares what our Supreme Court said? It’s clear that Trump does not.
Trump challenges the Constitution; this is his big shot.
The hum of their rotation fills each Founding Father’s grave;
Their spirits ask, no, pray, for someone who will rise to save
Our nation, the republic, Franklin challenged us to keep. (2)
We need a noble champion, for evil does not sleep.
It’s Trump versus America, the land we thought was ours.
No courts, no Congress, Trump’s assuming every branch’s powers.
The crisis some predicted has now landed in full force.
Will the nation rise again? Or a knight on a white horse?
Well, we have done this to ourselves; we voters are at fault.
We voted for a felon; unlike God, Trump will not “halt.” (3)
He will arrest, deport, and otherwise intimidate
All those who may oppose him until he can dominate.
(1) Donald Trump has been involved in thousands of lawsuits in his business life as well as criminal cases where he has been convicted but, so far, has served no time, due to endless appeals.
(2) On September 17, 1787, after the Constitution had been signed, a woman, Elizabeth Willing Powel, reportedly asked Ben Franklin if we would have a republic or a monarchy. He replied, “A republic, if you can keep it.”
(3) We are in the week of Passover, Pesach in Hebrew. The verb form of the word means, “to halt or skip.” When the Children of Israel were slaves in Egypt, on the night of the last of the ten plagues, (the slaying of the firstborn,) the Hebrews smeared some of the blood of the Paschal lamb on their doorposts and God “halted” and did not enter their houses. They were spared but God slew all the firstborn of the Egyptians, including the son of the Pharaoh. After this, Pharaoh finally “let my people go.” (See Exodus 12: 12,13.) Louis Armstrong has a wonderful version of this old, Negro Spiritual on the internet.
