Dolly first, now Gloria, giants of humanity, (1)
Have left us stuck with Donald Trump, and his insanity.
Parton wrote the songs we sing; Steinem fought for women’s rights.
They both were self-made women, lifting themselves to the heights.

These charismatic women, spoke to us in different ways,
Outstanding in their own fields, clearly worthy of our praise.
Each woman had no children; we got five from Donald’s wives.
Each woman’s life has blessed us; Donald Trump has plagued our lives.

Both women, well-known characters, each one with her own style,
Proficient and productive, (Gloria raised Donald’s bile.)
Both women were creative, and had decades long careers.
While Donald, in his decades, finally brought the world to tears.

Told us of the downtrodden and male-dominated scene.
Both women were truth-tellers and reformers in their souls.
With talent and persistence, they alone defined their roles.

Why Gloria and Dolly, when God could take Trump instead?
We have no need of Donald but it’s these two who are dead.
That leaves us stuck with Donald, who’s known mostly for his fraud.
Are theologians questioning the judgement of their God?

For, Gloria and Dolly show God doing His best work,
But Donald has slipped past God’s quality assurance clerk.
Both Gloria and Dolly: please God, send us more like them.
Our prayer will change for Donald, for we’ve had our fill of him.

(1) Dolly Parton: January 19, 1946-August 25, 2026. Gloria Steinem: March 25,
1934-September 2, 2026, two true giants of humanity, lost in the last two
weeks.
(2) In 1971, Dolly wrote a song about her childhood and a coat her mother
made for her out of multicolored rags, inspired by the Bible story of
Joseph’s “coat of many colors.” Genesis 37:3. We won’t dwell on the
ongoing scholarly argument about the correct Hebrew translation. (Dolly
has a huge library of other famous compositions.)
(3) Gloria Steinem co-founded Ms. Magazine in 1972, the first magazine run
entirely by women. One might even consider her one of the founders of
feminism itself.
