Is Donald Trump’s drive toward autocracy
Fading or might it succeed?
He’s trying to cripple democracy
And make us subjects to lead.
We’re watching him try to restrict the vote
Sending goons to polling sites.
Donald Trump thinks of himself as the GOAT, (1)
Who grants and takes away rights.
We’re a Republic but can we keep it? (2)
Donald has shown he hopes not.
He demonstrates he does not care one bit
For the rights for which we fought.
We have a Republic; will our laws hold?
We’re being put to the test.
Trump is surrounded by more and more gold.
High prices plague all the rest.
Trump makes it quite clear, he has just one goal:
Making his bank account grow.
Rich folks like Donald are on a great roll,
Shining with a golden glow.
We’re raking in money, hand over fist,
Trump tells us in his campaign. (3)
But “we” means “me;” (he’s a huge narcissist.)
No room for “us,” in his brain.
In this election, battle lines drawn,
Big money interests arrayed:
Are you a real soldier or just a pawn?
Keep what our forefathers made. (4)
(1) GOAT means the “greatest of all time,” usually referring to athletes.
(2) See Benjamin Franklin’s reply to Elizabeth Willing Powel on September 17,
1787. She asked if the Constitutional Convention had produced a monarchy
or a republic.
(3) Trump says this several times in his recent campaign speeches. High gas
prices make more money for oil companies, in which Trump owns stock.
