Some who run for office take an ethics leap
Into murky waters, wide and cold and deep,
Which leaves bullshit artists feeling free to lie,
Making campaign pledges they know they won’t keep.
Steaming bullshit artists sell what you will buy,
Fearing no god’s judgment, now or when they die.
Here’s their simple credo: say what helps them win.
Real estate and used cars: you’ve met such a guy.
In most democracies, that is how it’s been.
Those with the gift of gab, are well-versed in spin.
But that often means that they won’t govern well.
That takes study, patience, fact-based discipline.
Dante’s politicians: suffering deep in hell,
Frying with the fraudsters, deep ditch for a cell.
Hypocrites, seducers, for God to chastise,
Thrown together there, eternally to dwell.
Every now and then, a winner’s also wise.
But, it’s rough to govern, which is no surprise,
Blocked by bullshit artists’ public villainy,
Bought by special interests, which they don’t disguise.
Infrastructure, healthcare, the economy,
Serve our super rich folks’ common gluttony.
Serving common people: bills are hard to pass.
Tough to govern wisely…too much larceny.
In democracies, bullshitters passing gas
Tend to get elected; the most common class.
But to govern wisely is a different skill.
Been that way a long time, maybe always will.
