Is Trump the Best We Can Do?

Demolishing the East Wing as he wrecks democracy,
Trump’s shutting down the government in a conspiracy,
To flout the Constitution and to found autocracy.
Will he be our first monarch? Will that be Trump’s legacy?

Do we trust Trump enough to bid democracy adieu?
If we’re to have a king, is Trump the best that we can do?
If we make this mistake, will it be easy to undo?
Will we be stuck with Donald’s bills when all of them come due?

Some of our richest people seek Trump’s favor with a bribe.
They pay enormous fees for membership in Donald’s tribe.
For scientists to get grants, they must sign that they subscribe
To Donald Trump’s philosophy or risk a diatribe.

Trump’s shaking down our law firms and our universities.
It’s all done in the open; Trump employs no subtleties.
His rules apply to foreigners and native entities.
Trump sees himself up in the pantheon of deities.

Trump tolerates no criticism; we all must agree,
That Donald’s right on everything or risk the third degree.
To disagree with Donald Trump amounts to treachery
His DOJ is weaponized and made a mockery.

Trump’s charging the world tariffs, although we must pay the tax.
It’s pretty willy-nilly watching all those he attacks.
The smallest thing can set him off to swing his battle-ax.
Like TV ads in Canada, B.C. to Halifax.

Trump’s travelling the world to try to win a Nobel Prize.
He’s aiming for the Prize for Peace, which would be a surprise.
The Nobel Prize committee usually will summarize
Life histories of candidates. (Trump can’t deodorize.)

Trump is a would-be despot; clearly wanting to be king,
Like Putin is in Russia and like Xi is in Peking.
The people he will prosecute, the shit he’s trafficking,
Tell us to, “Pay attention, he won’t stop at anything.”
