March 30, DEI or Jim Crow?

Our choice, DEI or restoring Jim Crow: (1) (2)
Trump’s made it obvious which way he will go.
He thinks less of brown folks; he’s made that quite clear
And he seems to like fascists, like Vladimir. (3)

Controlling elections is one of Trump’s goals,
By lightening skins of who goes to the polls.
So, Trump’s issued orders that look like a ruse,
For states to change voting rules so he can’t lose.

Not too long ago, when the South had Jim Crow,
Black folks couldn’t vote; (back where Trump wants to go.)
We know that black voters lean toward Democrats,
So, Trump’s narcissistic mind thinks they are rats.

Make it harder to vote with more paperwork,
That next might be checked by a bigoted clerk?
For history tells us that our Red State vote
Will take back the skin hue that floats Donald’s boat.

The Voting Rights Act of 1965 (4)
Says, legally, Jim Crow is dead, not alive.
But it still survives in the white racist mind,
And in Donald’s order, which he has just signed. (5)

Jim Crow, DEI are now both in the courts.
And both due to statutes that Donald distorts.
The phrase, “We the People,” means that all of us,
Enjoy equal rights; racists are furious.

(1) DEI, diversity, equity, and inclusion, a concept that our institutions should show diversity of ethnicity, equal representation, and active measures should be taken to assure that these goals are achieved.
(2) Jim Crow laws in the American South enforced racial segregation. The name apparently comes from a song about a black man, “Jump Jim Crow.”
(3) Vladimir Putin
(4) The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson. Its purpose was to end laws that kept black people from voting. Most black people registered to vote as Democrats.
(5) In a recent Executive Order, Trump proposed that, among other things, proof of US citizenship must be given in order to register to vote. It is estimated that about 20 million native-born Americans do not have proof on paper that they were born here. The people in this situation are disproportionately black.
