June 18, Our Fig Tree

June 18, Our Fig Tree

Our fig tree is exuberant this year.

The signs of joyfulness are crystal clear.

Its leaves are large, deep green, to catch the sun

And lots of fruit is starting to appear.

It seems as if it’s been blessed by the sun;

New leaves, new fruit, new life, once more begun.

And Covid nineteen?  Fig trees do not care.

New fruit is growing now on every one.

It’s not because I’ve shown them special care,

Fruit trees and vines are blooming everywhere.

As long as trees have water, soil, and sun,

They grow new leaves and soon, the fruit they bear.

As long as trees have water, soil, and sun,

Their fruits regrow; the cycle has begun.

What threatens them is drought, not pestilence,

From climate change, from what mankind has done.
