December 15, Self Dealing

Trump’s goal this term is to increase his wealth.
He shows us openly, there is no stealth.
He has all kinds of merchandise for sale,
All sales designed for Trump’s financial health.

The ethicists who comment, weep and wail
That every principle will crack, then fail
Trump’s not a man to whom most rules apply;
He’ll serve as president while out on bail.

Such open grift: Trump has not had to lie,
Though he might “stretch the truth,” so folks will buy.
Much of his “merch” is clearly overpriced.
That’s what you get from Donald’s kind of guy.

With principles of ethics sliced and dice;
In Trump’s past business deals, that’s not sufficed.
So next we’ll see Trump’s grift move overseas;
That’s par for Donald’s Trumpian Zeitgeist.

When ethicists voice their analyses,
We hear a number of hypotheses
About why Trump would seek emoluments.
Could Donald Trump be Mephistopheles?

Does Trump’s behavior and indifference
To ethics, norms, and frank intransigence,
To “playing by the rules” that most accept,
Portend an avalanche of fraudulence?
