Sinking Down with Donald Trump

Trump’s sinking us down to the bottom,
To depths from which we may not rise.
Our super-rich who think they’ve bought him.
Might have an unpleasant surprise.

Rich Germans feared their labor unions.
They thought Hitler might serve them well.
The blunder they made backing Adolf
Is a story that we might retell.

Though history’s given fair warning
Of evil and past infamy,
Too many of us are complacent
And think, “This won’t happen to me.”

Did we vote ourselves into Hades,
A fate we richly deserve?
Refusing to learn history’s lessons,
The stop signs we did not observe?

We all knew of Donald’s behavior
And now it is getting much worse.
We’re watching democracy dying
And Donald Trump’s driving the hearse.

What will we leave to our grandchildren?
Democracy’s coming undone.
And, how will we answer Saint Peter,
When asked, “What the hell have you done?”
