Retribution

Trump’s lust for retribution, flaring right after he lost,
Has shown us that Democracy may pay a fatal cost.
For anyone opposing him is subject to the lash,
As universities have learned from Trump’s demands for cash.

Columbia, then Harvard, now Trump’s eyes are turning west
To Stanford and the UC system, his ignoble quest.
From UCLA, Trump demands a cool one billion bucks
To give them back the grants he took, like shooting sitting ducks.

The sin of universities is: they establish facts.
But truth and facts are just what Donald Trump would like to axe.
What Donald did to Paramount ought to serve to inform.
With Donald Trump in charge, such shakedowns have become the norm.

A gangland style protection racket, Donald will demand
From research universities, in “blue states” in the land,
From corporations and law firms, remember Paramount?
“Insurance premiums,” now swelling to a flowing fount.

You might recall with Paramount, Trump’s twenty billion suit.
(Solicitation of a bribe, you needn’t be astute)
Just sixteen million later, Paramount was off the hook
And Donald got his little slice; that’s clearly how things look.

Were shakedowns covered in Trump’s book, called “The Art of the Deal?” (1)
And, is “negotiation” just another word for “steal?”
First steal something from someone then charge them to give it back.
That’s how Trump deals with research grants, a bold, daylight attack.

Trump’s ICE agents all wear a mask but Donald Trump does not.
He’s proud of what he’s doing as we see what Trump hath wrought. (2)
For Trump thinks that he’s turned the shakedown into a fine art.
But it’s old-fashioned and it’s crude, artistic as a fart.

(1)The Art of the Deal, 1987 by Donald Trump and Tony Schwartz. Most critics have alleged that the book was really written by Schwartz after talking with Trump numerous times. Trump’s claims vary.

(2)On May 2, 1844, Samuel Morse demonstrated the first successful transmission of a telegraphic message from Washington, DC, to Baltimore, MD and back. The message transmitted was “What Hath God Wrought?” This comes from the Bible: Numbers 23:23, an interesting series of verses to read about the power of God.
