Another Person, Among Many, Shot Dead: 9-10-2025

Today, like every other day, a lot were shot to death,
A common reason in our land for drawing one’s last breath.
As one of them was quite well-known, it’s a big deal this time,
A young, important right-winger, therefore a heinous crime.

A hundred thirty killed each day, murders plus suicide.
Near fifty thousand lives per year, we just take them in stride.
A right-winger named Charlie Kirk topped off the pile of dead.
He was opposed to gun control, preferred the dead instead. (1)

Developed countries: gun death rates: the US holds first place.
The fear of being shot to death is not what others face.
The Constitution says that state militias may bear arms. (2)
But is that right unlimited, no matter whom it harms?

Does this mean every individual may have a gun?
That’s how it’s been interpreted and that is what we’ve done.
It’s also pretty clear that we’ve not managed guns too well.
Instead we’re living in a self-inflicted firearms hell.

So, Charlie Kirk’s been added to the piles of people shot.
Might our gun lovers change their minds? My guess is, they will not.
Have we turned guns to “molten gods,” that Yahweh’s words forbid, (3)
Gods valued more than life itself, as ego bows to id? (4)

When fifty thousand lives a year leaves minds immovable,
Does that mean that we think these lives are sacrificeable?
We paid our money, made our choice, though Yahweh said, “Choose life.” (5)
That does not mean to send folks early to their afterlife.

(1) Article: April 6, 2023, Newsweek Magazine. Kirk said that all our gun
deaths were worth it to preserve our Second Amendment rights.
(2) The United States Constitution: the Second Amendment states, “A
well-regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State,
the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.”
(3) Exodus 34: 17. See also, Exodus 20: 4,5. And Deuteronomy 5: 8,9.
These are three versions of Commandments (not suggestions) that
emerged from God’s communications with Moses on Mount Sinai.
(4) Sigmund Freud analyzed the human mind as composed of three
facets: the ego, our rational capability, the super ego, what we might
call our conscience or moral values, and the id, our animalistic
instincts. I know this is oversimplified.
(5) Deuteronomy 30: 19. Moses is relaying the words of Yahweh to the
people.
