There are two kinds of gorillas, a couple kinds of Pan
And lots and lots of monkeys and two Orangutans.
But there is just one Homo; there’s just one human clan.
Though skins have different pigments, they’re still all hues of Man.
We’re the last Homo standing; our cousins are all gone.
The last Homo standing, the one to carry on.
For as we were evolving, we acquired brighter brains,
And it helps your survival if you come in when it rains.
For example, there’s erectus, two million years ago.
He lasted near two million but then he had to go.
Neanderthal in Asia, with whom we interbred,
Left traces in our genomes; the rest, alas, are dead.
The last Homo standing, our ancestors all gone.
The last Homo standing, just us to carry on.
Though habilis, erectus, and neanderthal once thrived,
We ran them out of business; just we sapiens survived.
Was one Homo our ancestor or did we interbreed
With lots of other Homos, to form our current seed?
From Africa, our cradle, came Homo heidelberg,
Evolving to a genius, like Bach in Brandenburg.
We’re the last Homo standing, our kissing cousins gone.
The last Homo standing, My! How we carried on!
Where heidelberg, denisovans, and floresiensis stood,
When we moved in the neighborhood, then they all left for good.
