Solana Beach, April 5, 2002 - Dr. Stephen Baird and the Opossums of Truth SPRING INTO SCIENTIFIC GOSPEL at the Dove Library’s Ruby Schulman Auditorium on Sunday, April 28, 2002 at 3 p.m. This music group’s edgy humor delves into the themes of spring with songs about renewal, reproduction, and other basic elements of life in our universe. Hear songs about the Big Bang, how we got here, dangers of how we got here, and what happens when we reach the end of our days. Enjoy selections from Dr. Baird’s first CD, “Hallelujah! Evolution,” the newly released CD, “Ain’t Gonna Be No Judgment Day,” and several new songs never before heard in concert.

Scientific Gospel offers opinions and some answers to profound questions such as: “Where do we come from?” and “What does it all mean?” It explores issues of science, religion, the universe and creation, evolution, randomness, liquid water, rationality and irrationality. It praises heroes of science such as Charles Darwin, Gregor Mendel and more recently, Dr. Stanley Miller, Emeritus Professor of Chemistry at UCSD.

This unique musical genre was created by Dr. Baird to put the soul into science and make it fun and funny, accessible and understandable, so that modernity can finally win over fundamentalism in the battle for the hearts and minds of humanity. If the universe keeps expanding and does not eventually collapse to a new “Big Bang,” then how we live our lives here on earth is all-important. For if there is no end to time, there “Ain’t Gonna Be No Judgment Day.”

Come hear this blend of humor, science and a gospel/bluegrass beat with Dr. Stephen Baird, Professor of Pathology at UCSD School of Medicine and father of Scientific Gospel. The band: Daniel Baird, son of the father and software engineer for MUSICMATCH, and Ron Jackson, professor of traditional music at Buffalo Brothers Guitars in Carlsbad. They will be accompanied by adjunct Opossum, Given Harrison, primary school educator. Join the growing numbers of adherents who believe that one ultimately needs a sense of humor to survive in an increasingly irrational world.
